Artist’s Statement Regarding Painting and Drawing, 2016
I begin my paintings and drawings with items from my prized collections of old pictures and prints. These are repurposed to create images both visually stimulating and completely different from the originals, often disguising or subsuming the original images so much that the effect is subliminal. This allows me to conjure creatures and places that could be, or might have been. And with these strange landscapes and their inhabitants, often in the form of performing animals, I strive to draw new ideas and emotions from the solid, firm underpinnings of the past."
That these images are often troubling in almost inexpressible ways must be attributed to the sometimes dark and cynical workings of Roulier’s mind. Yet the works also hold the observer’s eye and thoughts with whimsy, bits of beauty and even the endearing.
